Most drinks scale easily, so a recipe for two can become a pitcher for a party. Make a batch of simple syrup to sweeten iced tea, lemonade and coffee all week. Hot drinks can be kept warm on low heat or in a slow cooker, and many cold drinks have mocktail-friendly options that suit kids and adults alike.

Common questions

How long does homemade simple syrup last?

Plain simple syrup made with equal parts sugar and water keeps for about 1 month in a clean, sealed jar in the fridge. Flavored syrups made with fruit, herbs or pumpkin puree keep for about 1 to 2 weeks. Throw out any syrup that turns cloudy, smells sour or shows mold. A richer 2-to-1 syrup lasts a little longer.

How do you make a big batch of punch for a party?

Mix the juices and any syrup ahead and chill them, then add sparkling water, soda or ginger ale right before serving so it stays fizzy. Plan on about 1 1/2 cups per guest for a two-hour party. Use a large block of ice or frozen juice cubes, which melt slower and won't dilute the punch as quickly as small cubes.

What is the difference between hot cocoa and hot chocolate?

In the US the names are used interchangeably, but traditionally hot cocoa is made from cocoa powder, sugar and milk, which gives a lighter drink. Hot chocolate is made by melting real chocolate into milk or cream, so it is richer and thicker. Many recipes use both cocoa powder and chopped chocolate for deep flavor and a smooth body.

How do you make a tea latte at home?

Steep two tea bags or 2 teaspoons of loose tea in about 1/2 cup of hot water for 4 to 5 minutes so the tea is strong. Sweeten it with a little syrup or honey, then top with steamed and frothed milk. Chai, black tea, Earl Grey and matcha all work. For an iced tea latte, pour the strong tea over ice and add cold milk.
