Method

  1. Pour the grape juice and lime juice into a large pitcher or drink dispenser. Add the strawberries and blueberries and stir.

  2. Cut the apple crosswise into thin rounds about 1/4 inch thick. Stamp out stars with a small star-shaped cookie cutter if you like, or cut the slices into thin wedges, and add them to the pitcher.

  3. Stir and let the fruit sit in the juice while you set out glasses, so it starts to flavor the punch.

  4. Just before serving, add the ice and slowly pour in the cold sparkling water. Stir gently once so it stays fizzy, then pour into glasses with a spoonful of fruit in each.

Tips

  • For an adult sangria, swap the sparkling water for a 750 ml bottle of chilled crisp dry white wine such as Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio, and top each glass with a splash of club soda. Keep it labeled and away from the kids' pitcher.
  • Tossing the apple slices in the lime juice first keeps them from browning.
  • Mix the juice and fruit up to 4 hours ahead and keep it in the fridge; add the bubbles and ice at the last minute.
