A scoop of vanilla gelato 'drowned' in a shot of hot espresso. The Italian dessert that doubles as after-dinner coffee, ready in five minutes.

Method

  1. Put two small glasses or cups in the freezer while you make the coffee. Cold glasses slow the melt.

  2. Brew two shots of espresso, or dissolve the instant coffee in the boiling water. Give it a minute to settle so it's very hot but not boiling.

  3. Scoop the gelato into the chilled glasses and grate over a little chocolate.

  4. At the table, pour a shot of coffee (and the liqueur, if using) over each scoop. Eat straight away with a teaspoon, alternating melting gelato with the coffee pooling underneath.

Tips

  • Make the coffee strong: weak coffee just tastes like melted ice cream.
  • Most vanilla gelato is gluten-free, but check the label if it matters, and skip anything with cookie pieces.
  • Leave out the liqueur and use decaf for an after-dinner version everyone can have.
